This is probably the longest I’ve taken to put up another chapter. I just want to say THANK YOU for sticking by for chapter 14 and keeping faith that I’d actually post it..because guess what? I FINALLY DID. Hope you liked this one…
The poster was in black and gold. It had a picture of a drawn microphone surrounded by stars and even included what looked like a clown riding a unicycle, though Nina couldn’t be sure. The words were written in bold, golden letters; TALENT SHOW, STARTS 7PM. BUY TICKETS AT FRONT OFFICE.
“You are going, right?” Emma asked suddenly, breaking Nina away from her thoughts. The brunette turned around to see her friend also looking at the poster.
“Are you?” Nina asked, avoiding the question.
“Of course I’m going. Niall’s performing and he said I have to go to give him moral support,” Emma grinned. “And besides, it might sound lame but everyone goes to the talent show. It’s pretty fun since they have a dance floor and in between some of the performances, they put on a few songs so people can dance.”
Nina frowned, confused. “So wait, is it a dance or a talent show?”
“Both,”Emma answered. She pointed at the poster, “see, here it says ‘Bring your dancing shoes’.”
“Why does it have to be a dance? It just makes everything complicated,” Nina sighed and turned away from poster, leaning her head against the noticeboard instead.
“Because the universe hates it when things are uncomplicated,” Emma answered knowingly, she paused. “Well, are you going?”
Nina closed her eyes, trying to weigh her options.
She didn’t know if she could bear watching Harry up on stage without bursting out into tears. It was already far too difficult being in the same room as him, let alone watching him perform while the entire school cheers him on.
And then there was Zayn. He had told Nina during art class that he wanted to give her something, but only after the talent show. Nina had no idea of what it could be, but she had to find him and tell him she couldn’t meet him in front of the cafe since she wasn’t going to the talent show in the first place…
But what would she tell him? Sorry Zayn, I can’t go to the talent show since I can’t look your best friend in the eye without bursting out into tears…
“Nina?” Emma prodded, when she was taking too long to answer.
“I’m not sure if I’m going,” Nina finally said.
“What? No, no, no… You have to go!” Emma looked outraged.
“I just…I don’t know,”Nina answered. It seemed like Emma was going to reply with an indignant retort, but Nina was saved when the History teacher finally arrived in the classroom.
“Oh, looks like we’re going in,” Nina said as she quickly followed the teacher in. Emma just shook her head as she sat next to Nina at her usual spot. “I’m not done with you yet. You’re giving me an answer after class and the answer better be yes,” she whispered under her breath. The history teacher was always strict about talking during class, so the whispering was necessary.
“Oh come on,” Nina replied quietly. “Why is it even a big deal if I go or not? Like, who would even care if I didn’t go?”
“A lot of people, and that includes me,” Emma frowned. “C’mon Nina, you need to get out and have some fun. I think the talent show is perfect for that.”
Nina didn’t reply, but she thought about it some more. Maybe she did need to get out… but that didn’t mean it had to be at the the school’s talent show of all places.
“3, 2, 1…” The lights went off and the room was flooded with a sudden darkness. Harry could hardly even see his own hands, let alone his bandmates.
“Oi, lighting guy!” Harry heard Louis call out.
There was a pause before someone from above squeaked a, “sorry!” before turning on the spotlight.
The spotlight was almost blinding, especially after the darkness. Harry could feel the heat of it through his shirt just as he could feel the nerves crawl up his skin.
Could he really do this? In front of the entire school? Could he find Nina in the crowd, look her in the eye and risk everything?
What if she didn’t forgive him? What if she hated the song? What if…
“You ready, Liam?” Niall asked. The music was on, everything was ready. Harry closed his eyes and listened as Liam’s voice sung out the lyrics he had wrote. Lyrics which were written for Nina. Lyrics that put his heart out in open and left it out for everyone to see. The song peeled away all the walls that Harry had put up and left him bare, vulnerable.
It was Harry’s turn to sing. He opened his mouth to say the words, but then closed it again. All he could picture was Nina laughing at him or telling him to grow up. The lyrics were caught in his throat and nothing was coming out.
Someone had stopped the music and the silence was so sudden that Harry looked up.
“You okay, mate?” Liam asked him.
Harry took a moment before replying, “I don’t think I can do this.”
No one said anything for a moment and Harry was conscious of the tension in the room. The lighting was still almost bright enough to blind him so he closed his eyes and forced out a little laugh.
“Sorry about that..let’s start again. From the beginning,”
Harry looked around at his friends, when they didn’t reply.
Their eyes were all so concerned, could he really let them down?
“You sure you’re okay?” This time it was Niall who asked.
Harry nodded, “positive.”
“Well, I guess the rehearsal went as good as we’d hope,” Liam was saying as they walked towards Harry’s business class.
“Yeah, I guess,” Harry replied.
“Just as long as the lighting guy doesn’t mess up again,” Liam continued. Harry nodded. They didn’t talk for a moment until Liam broke the silence, “Listen Harry, I know you’re nervous about singing to Nina but she’ll love it. I just know it, the song’s perfect.”
“She’ll think it’s stupid and laugh at me,” Harry said under his breath.
“No she won’t. I know that no matter what she thinks, Nina is the type of girl to at least hear you out,” Liam said calmly.
“I guess you’re right,” Harry admitted. He paused as a thought occurred to him, “but Liam…What if she doesn’t come to the talent show?”
Liam smiled. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it,” he said.
Harry eyed Liam suspiciously, “You’re not planning on kidnapping her, are you?”
Liam laughed, “Of course not!”
“Good, because I think she hates me for enough reasons. Let’s not add kidnapping to the list,”
“But I’ll be doing the kidnapping,” Liam said, confused.
“Yeah, but I want her to be there, so it’d be my fault,” Harry explained.
“Okay, no kidnapping then,” Liam grinned at him but then his smile faltered a little as his eyes grew serious. “I hope this works out for you, Harry.”
Harry smiled at his friend sadly, “Me too.”
Zayn frowned at the stack of empty cardboard boxes at his front porch. There were about ten of them, all different shapes and sizes. He shook his head and opened the front door with his key.
“Mum?” he called out warily. There was a noise in the kitchen and suddenly, his mum appeared wearing an apron.
“Oh, you’re home,” his mum said. Zayn didn’t reply and looked around. Something was off, everything was too quiet.
“Where’s everyone else?” he asked.
“We’re all in the dining room,” his mum said.
“Why?” Zayn asked, suddenly more confused than ever, it was four in the afternoon, nowhere near dinner time. But he followed his mum anyway.
“Just take a seat,” his mum gave him a sad smile when she reached the dinner table. Zayn looked around, his sisters were there. They had puffy eyes and Waliyha looked as if she wanted to throw something and burst out crying.
“What’s going on?” Zayn asked carefully.
”Our parents hate us, that’s what’s going on!” his sister replied before his mum could answer.
“What..?” Zayn looked at his mum, who seemed to sigh.
“Sit down, Zayn,” she said sadly. Zayn sat down without a word.
“You kids weren’t supposed to know until later…”His mum started and dread built up inside Zayn as he guessed what was going on. He was always the type to guess what was happening from only a few words.
Nina looked at the clock. 6:13pm.
She sighed and turned back to her laptop. Well, even if she wanted to go, she would’t be able to.
She didn’t end up buying a ticket for the talent show anyway, so it was impossible that she could go.
And even then, she didn’t have a dress to wear.
She sighed again and closed her eyes, already regretting the decision not to go. Just as she was about to call Emma to ask her if she had a spare ticket or something, the doorbell rang.
“Can you get that Nina!” her mum called out. Nina sighed and rolled herself off the bed before marching down the steps and opening the front door.
It took her a moment function as she was completely caught off guard.
“Liam?” she asked, the surprise showing in her face. Liam was all dressed up, wearing a grey waistcoat and light purple tie.
“Hi Nina. It’s not just me, Emma and Niall are here too,” Liam smiled. And sure enough, Emma, who was wearing a little black dress was walking from her driveway with Niall at her arm, who was looking classy in black tie.
“What…? Why…” Nina tried speaking but was too baffled with the situation. “What’re you guys doing here?” she finally managed.
“You’re not wearing sweatpants are you? I mean, the grunge look is a bit 90s…luckily I brought you a dress,” Emma started as she walked into the house, followed by Niall.
“Wait, wait. What’s going on?” Nina asked, as Liam gave her an apologetic smile as he followed the others in.
“We’re taking you to the talent show,” Niall said a matter-of-factly.
“I don’t have a ticket though, or a dress or anything,” Nina said as she closed the door behind them.
“I brought you a dress,” Emma said, handing her a bag. Nina took the bag wordlessly and looked inside to find a gorgeous looking strapless, red dress. “we kind of had to guess your size,” Emma said.
“Wow, it’s gorgeous” Nina said. “Thanks so much, I was actually regretting not going…But guys, I still don’t have a ticket.”
“Liam has your ticket,” Emma explained. “Now c’mon, we have to get you ready,” Emma grabbed Nina’s arm and dragged her up the stairs.
“You guys can make yourselves comfortable,” Nina called out to Liam and Niall who were standing around the staircase.
“Okay!” Niall replied.
“That’s not a permission slip to the fridge, Niall!” Emma added and Nina laughed.
“Remember, you girls have less than twenty minutes to get ready!” Liam called out after them.
“Yes, mother!” Emma replied and Nina grinned. Maybe going to the talent show wasn’t such a bad idea.
I didn’t realise how much I missed writing about Nina and the boys (oh and Emma!) until I actually started writing. I’m sorry this is a bit short, but guys… the next chapter is the last one *le creys*
